Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin training camp.

Howard, a rookie second-round pick expected to start, had what coach Adam Gase termed "minor" knee surgery.

Howard must pass a physical to be cleared for on-field activity. He was injured on the final day of mandatory minicamp in June, necessitating the scope.

Second-year cornerback Tony Lippett worked with the first-team defense with Howard on the sideline in June.

The Dolphins' reworked secondary includes left cornerback Byron Maxwell, who was acquired in a pre-draft trade with the Eagles after a down season in Philadelphia. Maxwell signed a six-year, $63 million contract in free agency in 2015 to leave Seattle for the Eagles.

The Eagles renegotiated Maxwell's contract to lower his base salary this season and in 2017 from $18.5 million to $8.5 million. However, he's now guaranteed more money -- $13.5 million.
