New Jersey Devils' Kyle Palmieri added to U.S. World Cup roster

New Jersey Devils forward Kyle Palmieri was tabbed Wednesday to replace Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan on Team USA's roster for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey 2016.

Palmieri recorded a career season with the Devils in 2015-16, posting career highs in goals (30), assists (27) and games played (82). For his efforts, Palmieri received a five-year, $23.25 million contract extension two weeks ago.

Palmieri was chosen to take the place of Callahan, who is just one month removed from right hip surgery and is unable to participate in the tournament that begins on Sept. 17.

"Kyle brings an all-around game that we're confident will fit nicely with the framework we're looking to build," Team USA general manager Dean Lombardi told USA Hockey's website. "He's coming off an outstanding year in New Jersey and will play an important role with our team."

Palmieri is no stranger to representing his country, as he claimed the gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship and the bronze in both the same tournament the following year as well as the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

Selected by Anaheim with the 26th overall pick of the 2009 draft, Palmieri has collected 73 goals and as many assists in 280 career contests with the Ducks and Devils.
