Rain washed out an entire day at the French Open on Monday for the first time in 16 years.

Tournament organizers were forced to call off play because of the persistent rain -- the first complete washout in Paris since May 30, 2000.

Matches will be rescheduled for Tuesday when the forecast calls for a chance of rain.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic, a three-time runner-up at Roland Garros, had been due to play No. 14 seed Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the quarterfinals.

In the women's draw, defending champion and No. 1 Serena Williams was to play 18th-seeded Elina Svitolina, while sister Venus was to face last year's semifinalist Timea Bacsinszky.
