Two horses die at early Preakness Day races

Two horses died after racing at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday ahead of the 141st Preakness Stakes in Baltimore.

Homeboykris, a 9-year-old horse that ran in the 2010 Kentucky Derby, collapsed and died after winning the day's first race by a half-length.

After having his picture taken in the winner's circle, Homeboykris collapsed on his walk back to the barn. Track officials said the gelding likely suffered cardiovascular collapse.

During the fourth race on Preakness Day, 4-year-old filly Pramedya collapsed on the turf and suffered a broken leg. She was euthanized on the track.

Pramedya's jockey, Daniel Centeno, was thrown to the turf and fractured his right collarbone. He was taken to the hospital.

A steady rain soaked Pimlico Race Course on Saturday morning, creating a soggy Preakness for Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and the other 10 horses.

The National Weather Service predicted a 100 percent chance of rain throughout the day.

Trainer Doug O'Neill did not seem concerned about the rain for Nyquist, who has an 8-0 record,

"With a horse like Nyquist, I'm not overly concerned about the weather," O'Neill said Friday. "As far as rain or shine, we're not going to change anything shoeing-wise. He's going to wear the same shoes he's got on. We'd just love to have a beautiful day."
