The New York Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list due to a groin injury, the team announced Friday.

Sabathia suffered the injury during Wednesday's start when he turned in his best performance of the season. Sabathia tossed seven shutout innings, giving up six hits and striking out six while beating the Baltimore Orioles.

"I guess in the fourth inning of his last start, he felt it," manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "He did not tell us until after the start and kind of wanted to wait (to see) how he felt the next day. We thought it would probably be a good idea to get an MRI today to make sure and lo and behold he's got a groin strain.

"I had no idea until after the game and he pitched so well you never would have known."

The move with the 35-year-old Sabathia was made retroactive to May 5.

Sabathia is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA in five starts this season.

New York also signed left-hander Phil Coke to a major-league contract and recalled him from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Coke recently signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees.
