Weather creates havoc with weekend sports schedule

Cancellations and postponements piled up as a massive snowstorm hammered the Eastern United States on Friday.

Blizzard warnings were issued for the Baltimore and Washington D.C., metro areas and blizzard watches extended to Philadelphia and New York City. Five states and the District of Columbia declared states of emergency.

The New England Patriots held a 7 a.m. ET press conference Friday before getting ready to fly to Denver for Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Broncos.

The Carolina Panthers moved up Friday's practice three hours as they prepared outdoors for Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Arizona Cardinals.

"Mario Addison said it best: 'The elements may change, but we don't, we don't change who we are.' So we went out and practiced," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. "The guys had great energy. They really were focused in on what they need to do with the exception of a few guys making snow angels out there. In fact, on the offensive side I don't think we dropped a pass."

The Cardinals are scheduled to fly into Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday as previously planned due to the 6:40 p.m. ET start of Sunday's game.

The field at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., remained covered by a tarp because of several inches of snow. The plan is to uncover the field sometime Saturday, weather permitting.

Saturday's NBA game between the Boston Celtics at the Philadelphia 76ers was postponed and will be made up on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. Saturday's game between the Utah Jazz at the Washington Wizards was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Friday night's NHL game between the Anaheim Ducks at the Washington Capitals was postponed. A makeup date will be announced later.

A decision regarding Sunday's Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington game will be announced Saturday morning.

The ACC moved Saturday's Syracuse at Virginia game to Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. The league also moved Virginia's game against Wake Forest on Monday to Tuesday night .

Temple's game against undefeated SMU was moved from Saturday to Sunday at noon ET.

Villanova's game against Providence was moved from Saturday to Sunday a 12:30 p.m. ET.

NASCAR postponed its 2016 Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Charlotte, N.C., from Friday night to Saturday afternoon because of snow and ice. Former drivers Terry Labonte, Curtis Turner, Bobby Isaac and Jerry Cook will join track owner and operator Bruton Smith as members of the 2016 induction class.
