Dallas Cowboys' Brent retires again

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent has decided to retire again.

Brent first announced his retirement in July 2013 while awaiting trial for an intoxication manslaughter charge, stemming from the Dec. 8, 2012 crash that killed teammate and good friend Jerry Brown.

After serving a 180-day jail sentence, Brent re-signed with the Cowboys prior to the start of the 2014 season but was suspended 10 games by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy. He returned in November and played one regular-season game before an injury kept him sidelined until the playoffs.

"I visited with Josh (Thursday) and he's decided to retire," said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett on Friday at the start of the team's minicamp. "He's going to focus on getting his life back in order. I admire Josh in a lot of ways for coming back from a really significant situation. It's not easy. I think he's worked very hard to find some normalcy in his life at this point and I think he just wants to focus on that right now. We wish him nothing but the best."

Brent, who appeared in both playoff games for Dallas last January, originally joined the Cowboys as a seventh-round pick of the 2010 draft out of Illinois, where he also was a teammate of Brown's.

In 40 regular-season games, Brent posted 46 tackles. He emerged as a key rotational defender for Dallas during the 2012 season, starting five games and compiling 22 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks over 12 contests prior to his arrest.
