Former Giants coach Allie Sherman dies at 91

Allie Sherman, who led the New York Giants to NFL championship games in his first three seasons as head coach, died Saturday in Manhattan. He was 91.

Sherman coached the Giants from 1961-68 and compiled a 57-51-4 regular-season record.

The Giants lost to Green Bay in the 1961 and 1962 championship games and to Chicago in the 1963 title game.

Sherman was the Giants' backfield coach from 1949-53 and returned to the club as a scout in 1957 after coaching the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers for three years. He was named offensive coordinator two years later when Vince Lombardi left for the Packers.
