SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- San Franciscans said goodbye to Candlestick Park Thursday night during the last performance before its implosion.
The stadium has housed the San Francisco Giants and the 49ers. The 49ers played the season that led them to the their first Superbowl and both Willie Mays and Barry Bonds set hitting records at the park.
Sports are not the only memorable events that took place at Candlestick. The Beatles' final live performance was held at the stadium in 1966. Pope John Paul II hosted a mass at the location in 1987 that saw a congregation of 70,000 people.
"When you came to 'The Stick,' you knew that it was going to be something special," 49ers Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott told CBS News. "In my life, I believe that you pay your respects at the end of someone's life. And you pay them because of what they stand for. This place stands for a lot."
Paul McCartney closed the stadium's history with a performance Thursday night.
Candlestick Park will be replaced with a retail development.
