GREEN BAY, Wis., July 14 (UPI) -- The Green Bay Packers won't retire legendary quarterback Brett Favre's jersey this season out of fear fans might boo the gesture.

"That's an issue," team President Mark Murphy told ESPN Wisconsin of the possible negative reaction. "He doesn't want it, and neither do we. He wouldn't want to come back and get booed. You can't control 80,750 people. I really think as time goes on, every year that passes, it's less likely that he would get booed, but that is an issue."

Case in point, former Packers kicker Ryan Longwell was booed by the fans when he signed a ceremonial one-year contract last season. He had left the team for the Minnesota Vikings and said there were better restaurant options in his new city.

Favre admitted any bad feelings from fans were entirely his fault when he left the team to play for the New York Jets.
