Jets owner: Rex Ryan to return as head coach

NEW YORK, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- New York Jets head Coach Rex Ryan will return in 2014, team owner Woody Johnson confirmed Sunday.

Johnson told the team's website shortly after the Jets season-ending 20-7 win at Miami Ryan will back to lead the team after months of speculation over his fate.

"I couldn't be any prouder of this team," he said after New York won its final two games to finish 8-8.

The Jets had fallen to 5-7 after a 23-3 home loss against the Dolphins early in December, but closed with three wins in four games behind rookie quarterback Geno Smith.

His performance Sunday helped knock the Dolphins out of playoff contention and officially handed New York second place in the AFC East.

Ryan led the Jets to two AFC Championship Game appearances and still has just one losing season in his five-year tenure.
