In the latest edition, published Wednesday, Rolling Stone tracked Hernandez's life from when he was a high school football star to an NFL player to a man suspected of killing an acquaintance.
Hernandez is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd.
Among the five takeaways in the story, "The Gangster in the Huddle," was that Hernandez heavily used the hallucinogenic drug angel dust -- the common name for phencyclidine -- becoming so paranoid during the last year that he carried a gun.
The magazine also said Hernandez so riled Patriots head coach Bill Belichick because of missed practices and hooligan behavior, he was dangerously close to being cut.
Both of Hernandez' parents had criminal records, as did much of his extended family, Rolling Stone said.
The magazine article also said Hernandez's college coach, then-University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer, may have helped cover up failed drug tests, as well as two violent incidents.
