CHICAGO, July 22 (UPI) -- Max Scherzer tamed the White Sox on two runs over eight innings Monday and the Detroit Tigers rolled to a 7-3 win over Chicago.

Scherzer (14-1) rebounded from his first loss of the season in his previous outing with a strong performance, allowing just four hits. The right-hander didn't issue a walk and struck out en route to the victory.

Victor Martinez went 4-for-5 with three RBI and Torii Hunter bashed a solo homer for Detroit, which lost American League batting average and RBI leader Miguel Cabrera to a sore hip flexor in the fifth inning.

The first-place Tigers came into the contest with a 1 1/2-game lead over Cleveland atop AL Central.

White Sox starter Chris Sale (6-9) struck out 11 but surrendered four runs (two earned) on seven hits over eight full innings.

Conor Gillaspie and Dayan Viciedo each socked a solo homer for Chicago, which fell in the first of a four-game series.
