Jeter injures leg; to miss weekend series

NEW YORK, July 12 (UPI) -- New York shortstop Derek Jeter, who was injured Thursday in his first game of the season, will miss this weekend's series against Minnesota, the Yankees said.

Jeter missed the first 91 games of the season while recovering from a broken ankle, an injury suffered in the playoffs last October.

He was activated off the 60-day disabled list and returned to the lineup as a designated hitter Thursday but left early with a leg problem. He was 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman on Friday said Jeter had a Grade 1 strain of his right quadriceps. He added that Jeter would be held out of the three games against the Minnesota Twins.

With the All-Star break early next week, the next game Jeter could play would be next Friday against the Red Sox in Boston.

Cashman said Jeter will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break and wouldn't rule out Jeter returning to the disabled list.
