IOC President Rogge endorses 28 sports for Olympics

May 31, 2013 at 12:53 PM

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, May 31 (UPI) -- International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said Friday in St. Petersburg, Russia, 28 sports are the optimal number for the Olympics program.

Speaking after a meeting of the IOC executive board, Rogge approved of the Summer Olympics' 25 core sports, plus three to be added at an upcoming board meeting, the British newspaper The Daily Mail said.

"We've has a great executive board meeting," Rogge said. "We considered the Games' scale boundaries because there were too many sports, and decided 28 would be enough. The (national sports) federations decided that it is possible to include new events at the expense of the old."

Rogge said the IOC had added too few sports in the past few years, and the dynamics of world sport have changed, the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass reported.
