Querrey advances to Nice Open quarterfinals

NICE, France, May 22 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Gilles Simon and No. 3 Sam Querrey won in second-round matches Wednesday at the Nice Open ATP tournament in France.

Simon, whose match was interrupted by a lengthy rain delay, eliminated French countryman Guillaume Ruffin 6-4, 6-3. Simon won 57 percent of the points on serve and more than half (22-20) off Ruffin's serve to advance to the quarterfinals.

Querrey beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5, 6-3 by saving six of the seven break points he faced. He had three breaks on the day, including the only one in the second set to take a quarterfinal spot.

In other matches Wednesday, Gael Monfils defeated sixth-seeded Fabio Fognini 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and Edouard Roger-Vasselin eliminated Ricardas Berankis, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Robin Haase eliminated fourth-seeded John Isner 46-4, 1-6, 7-5, recording four breaks against the hard serving American.

Also in the second round, Albert Montanes nipped Victor Hanescu 7-5, 7-6 (7-2); Paul Henri Mathieu beat Carlos Berlocq 7-5, 3-6, 6-3; and Pablo Andujar raced past Lu Yen-Hsun 6-2, 6-0.
