MLB: New York Yankees 3, Kansas City 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 11 (UPI) -- Andy Pettitte pitched seven solid innings and Vernon Wells socked a go-ahead homer Saturday in the New York Yankees' 3-2 win over Kansas City.

Pettitte (4-2) broke a personal three-start winless streak, holding the Royals to two runs on five hits. The veteran left-hander walked one and struck out seven.

David Robertson tossed a scoreless eighth and Mariano Rivera picked up his 13th save despite allowing a hit in the ninth as the Yankees racked up a fourth straight win.

Wells' long ball with Chris Stewart aboard in the fifth inning erased a 2-1 New York deficit.

The loss was hung on Royals starter James Shields (2-3), who gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over eight frames.

Billy Butler belted a solo homer for Kansas City.
