NHL: New York Rangers 1, New York Islanders 0 (OT)

UNIONDALE, N.Y., April 13 (UPI) -- Dan Girardi scored 3:11 into overtime and Henrik Lundqvist logged a shutout Saturday in the New York Rangers' crucial 1-0 win over the New York Islanders.

Girardi provided the game-winner when Derick Brassard found him with a quick pass in the right circle and the defenseman put a shot past Evgeni Nabokov into the upper left corner of the net.

Lundqvist turned aside all 29 shots he saw for his first shutout of the year, which came an opportune time as the Rangers battle the Islanders and Winnipeg Jets for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

The result put the Islanders in control of the East's seventh seed with 47 points, while the Rangers moved two points ahead of idle Winnipeg for the eighth slot with 46 points.

The Rangers also have a game in hand over the Jets.

Nabokov finished with 19 saves for the Islanders, whose three-game winning streak was snapped.
