CLEVELAND, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Cleveland said Saturday night it's taking a low-cost flyer on Jason Giambi, signing the 42-year-old to a minor league deal as a possible designated hitter.

The Indians have Giambi a spring training invite after failing to sign Travis Hafner or Jim Thome. He will make $750,000 if he makes the big league club, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported.

Giambi hit .280 hitter with 429 homers and 1,405 RBI over 18 major league seasons, the last three with Colorado. In 2012, he hit .225 in 60 games, producing only one homer and eight RBI.
