Eagles fire defensive coordinator Castillo

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and named defensive backs coach Todd Bowles to replace him, the team announced.

"We're six games into the season and average isn't good enough," head coach Andy Reid said of the Eagles' 3-3 record. "I know the potential of this team and insist on maximizing it."

Castillo was the Eagles' longtime offensive line coach, and was promoted in January 2011. His firing could be seen as a move made of desperation, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday, since Eagles' owner Jeffrey Lurie said, prior to the season, another 8-8 record this year, as in 2011, would not be enough for Reid to return as head coach for his 15th year.
