Copil, Querrey advance on Beijing upsets

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Marius Copil and Sam Querrey posted three-set upset wins Monday at the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing.

Copil ousted fourth-seeded Marin Cilic 3-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4. Copil pounded out 21 aces and won just one more point (98-97) than Cilic in the 2 1/2-hour match.

He managed two of his four breaks in the third set in advancing to the second round.

Querrey defeated No. 8-seeded Fernando Verdasco 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Querrey had just two break points in the match but finished them both off to provide the difference in the second and third sets.

Florian Mayer roared past Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-2 in the most lopsided of Monday's matches. Mayer dropped just 10 points in eight service games and didn't face a break point.

Carlos Berlocq stopped Marinko Matosevic 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; Zhang Ze beat Wu Di 6-4, 6-1; and Kevin Anderson claimed a 5-7, 7-3, 6-1 decision over Brian Baker.
