DETROIT, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Jamey Carroll drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning single Sunday and the Minnesota Twins swept a doubleheader from Detroit with a 2-1 victory.
Denard Span led off the extra frame in a 1-1 tie game with a pinch-hit single against Jose Valverde (3-4) and went to second on an out.
Carroll then lashed a solid single to center field, allowing Span to slide home with the decisive score.
Jared Burton (2-1) earned the victory with a scoreless ninth and Glen Perkins fired a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th for his 14th save as the Twins took two of three from the Tigers.
Starter P.J. Walters allowed a first-inning run then fired five shutout frames in Minnesota's victory.
Miguel Cabrera drove in the only run for the Tigers, who blew a chance to forge a first-place tie with American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox with Sunday's two losses.
Instead, the Tigers fell a full game behind the Chisox with 10 contests remaining.
