MLS: Columbus 1, Chivas USA 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Justin Meram scored in the 89th minute Wednesday to push Columbus into a playoff position with a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA.

Columbus (13-10-6) jumped past D.C. United by one point into the fifth and final post-season spot in the Eastern Conference. Chivas USA (7-14-7) lost its fourth in a row and is winless in eight games.

Jairo Arrieta started the play that led to the only goal of the game, firing a shot that goalkeeper Dan Kennedy batted away.

The rebound came back to Arrieta, however, and he quickly sent the ball to Meram -- whose one-timer went in easily.
