ATLANTA, June 25 (UPI) -- Danny Ferry, who previously worked in the front office for the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers, has been named general manager of the Atlanta Hawks.

Ferry, 45, agreed to a multiyear deal but financial terms weren't released. He also becomes president of basketball operations for Atlanta, the NBA team said Monday.

Ferry is replacing Rick Sund, whose contract expires this week. He had been the Hawks' general manager since 2008. Atlanta is coming off a season in which the Hawks went 40-26, were second in the NBA's Southeast Division and fifth in the Eastern Conference.

"My family and I are thrilled to join the Hawks organization and Atlanta community," Ferry said. "There were many components that made this the right fit for me, but clearly my confidence in the ownership group and their dedication to building a championship caliber franchise was most important."

Ferry was vice president of basketball operation for the Spurs from 2010-12. He was general manager for the Cavaliers from 2005-10.

He played 13 seasons in the NBA -- all with either the Spurs or Cavaliers. He averaged 7.0 points and 2.8 rebounds over 917 NBA games.
