
NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice, and Patrick Elias added a goal and two assists Tuesday in the New Jersey Devils' 5-1 spanking of Winnipeg.
Kovalchuk gave the Devils a 1-0 lead in the first period and capped three consecutive Devils tallies in the second with a power-play marker 7:38 into the frame.
Petr Sykora and David Clarkson scored in between as New Jersey opened a six-game homestand with a one-sided victory.
Martin Brodeur turned aside 20-of-21 shots to beat the Jets for the third time this season.
Tobias Enstrom notched the only goal for the Devils.
Chris Mason, who logged a shutout in his previous start, was chased in the second period after yielding four goals on 15 shots. Ondrej Pavelec relieved and stopped 4-of-5 the rest of the way.
