DALLAS, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Ian Mahinmi came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points Friday, touching off a late rush that lifted the Dallas Mavericks to a 99-86 win over Toronto.
The defending NBA champion Mavericks won their first game of the season. They had become the first reigning champion to start a season 0-3 since Boston in 1969.
Mahinmi, in his fourth NBA season and with a career scoring average of 3.4 points per game, played 29 minutes. Lamar Odom, obtained in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers prior to the season, played just 12 minutes and missed all three of his field goal attempts.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points for Dallas and Jason Terry had 17.
Toronto led by a point with 2:30 to go in the third period, but Dallas outscored the Raptors the rest of the way 32-18.
Andrea Bargnani had 30 points for Toronto and Leandro Barbosa had 20.
