MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson has a torn knee ligament, the team announced, leaving him 30 yards short of 1,000 for the season.
Peterson was hurt during Saturday's victory over Washington when Redskins safety DeJon Gomes smashed into his left knee from the side.
After a magnetic imaging resonance test was administered, the team announced late Saturday Peterson had torn the knee's anterior cruciate ligament.
"I just knew it was something bad," Peterson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune after the game. "You take a blow to the knee like that, you're concerned about the ACL and the MCL, those ligaments, mainly. I'm just trying to stay positive as I can."
Peterson carried the ball 12 times for 38 yards and a score Saturday before the injury, leaving him with with 970 yards -- 30 short of reaching 1,000 yards for the fifth time in his five NFL seasons, the newspaper said.
