ST. LOUIS, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Brian Elliott stopped 21-of-22 shots and faced only four shots in the third period of the St. Louis Blues' 2-1 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings.
St. Louis shut out Detroit in the final two periods to improve to 3-0-1 under new Coach Ken Hitchcock.
Matt D'Agostino scored a power-play goal in the first period and Alexander Steen knocked in the game-winner midway through the second period. The Blues outshot Detroit 37-22 and successfully killed all six of the Red Wings' power plays.
Jimmy Howard stopped 35 shots in the loss, which ended Detroit's four-game wining streak.
The Wings started out well. They took a 1-0 lead at 6:07 of the first period when Justin Abdelkader tipped in a pass from behind the net by Drew Miller.
St. Louis struck back at 17:19 when D'Agostino grabbed a loose puck in the slot and snapped a shot past Howard.
Steen broke the deadlock at 10:16 of the second period when he intercepted a pass at the blue line and scored on a wrist shot from the top of the left circle.
