BALI, Indonesia, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- No. 3-seeded Sabine Lisicki won Friday at the WTA's Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Indonesia but top-seeded Marion Bartoli retired with an injury.
Lisicki is the only seeded player in the eight-woman event to make it to the semifinals after she won eight of the last 10 games in a 7-5, 6-2 win over Daniela Hantuchova. Lisicki fought off 9-of-10 break-point chances for Hantuchova while finishing off four of the 17 break points she had.
Bartoli was on the court for 2 hours, 40 minutes while playing Anabel Medina Garrigues but suffered an ankle injury in the third set.
After Medina Garrigues posted a break to open the third set and take a 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 1-0 lead, Bartoli tearfully said she couldn't continue. That allowed Medina Garrigues to advance to Saturday's tournament semifinals in Indonesia.
Bartoli had two match-point opportunities in the tiebreaker that Medina Garrigues turned back.
Lisicki and Medina Garrigues clash in the semifinals, their first WTA meeting. The other semifinal has defending champion Ana Ivanovic playing Nadia Petrova.
