
NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Robinson Cano cracked a grand slam Saturday and the New York Yankees pounded Detroit 9-3 in the completion of the suspended opener of their divisional series.
Cano added a pair of run-scoring doubles to finish with six RBI and Derek Jeter scored three times for the Yankees, who took a 1-0 lead over the Tigers in a game that was suspended due to rain Friday after 1 1/2 innings.
Ivan Nova (1-0) came on to hurl 6 1/3 innings after the resumption, limiting the Tigers to two runs on four hits, overcoming four walks while fanning five.
Mariano Rivera collected a save, recording the last out after Detroit had scored twice in the ninth.
Detroit's Doug Fister (0-1) took the mound to begin the resumed game and was lit up for six runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Justin Verlander started for the Tigers Friday and pitched one scoreless inning while CC Sabathia hurled two shutout frames for the Yankees before the suspension.
Delmon Young homered and Ryan Raburn went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Detroit.
