TORONTO, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Edwin Encarnacion completed a five-run eighth inning with a three-run double Wednesday that rallied the Toronto Blue Jays to a wild 11-10 victory over Boston.
Boston scored twice in the ninth inning to close within one and the game ended when pinch-runner Mike Aviles, representing the tying run, was thrown out trying to steal second.
The Red Sox squandered a chance to gain ground on the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East. New York lost in 10 innings to Baltimore, but remained two games in front of Boston.
Boston took a 3-0 lead in the first thanks in part of a two-run single by Marco Scutaro, fell behind 5-3 through three innings and then went back in front with a four-run fourth that featured a three-run blast from Jacoby Ellsbury.
David Ortiz added to the Boston lead with a solo homer in the fifth but Encarnacion brought the Blue Jays within 8-6 on an RBI single in the seventh.
Wildness on the part of Boston reliever Daniel Bard in the eighth allowed the Blue Jays to come from behind. Toronto loaded the bases on a hit batter, a single and a walk and Bard (2-6) then forced in two runs with bases-loaded walks to Eric Thames and Jose Bautista.
Matt Albers finally relieved Bard and surrendered the bases-clearing double to Encarnacion.
Shawn Camp (4-3), the fourth of five Toronto pitchers, worked the eighth to get the win. Frank Francisco gave up two runs in the ninth, but still claimed his 13th save.
