Rain washes out women's Open quarterfinals

NEW YORK, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Both the day and night sessions of the women's singles quarterfinals of the U.S. Open were canceled due to rain Tuesday.

The rain washed out a scheduled meeting between second-seeded Vera Zvonareva and ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur, as well as a match between Flavia Pennetta and Angelique Kerber.

The matches were re-scheduled for Wednesday, when rain was also is forecast.
