LOUDON, N.H., Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Ryan Hunter-Reay was credited with a victory after a wild and controversial finish at Sunday's IZOD IndyCar Series event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Hunter-Reay was leading when officials decided to restart the race with 10 laps remaining even though a light but steady rain was causing tough driving conditions.
Shortly after the restart, Danica Patrick spun out, crashing into several cars, including that of championship contender Will Power.
After Power angrily jumped out of his badly damaged car and sent an inappropriate finger gesture toward race control officials, the race was halted.
The officials declared the finishing order to be based on the order before the restart, thus handing Hunter-Reay his first victory of the season.
Oriol Servia was awarded second, followed by Scott Dixon, rookie James Hinchcliffe and Power.
Points leader and pole-sitter Dario Franchitti was involved in a crash with Takuma Sato and finished 20th. As a result, his advantage over Power dwindled from 63 to 47 points.
