MONTREAL, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Novak Djokovic, competing for the first time since he became the No. 1 ranked player in the world, earned a third-round berth Wednesday at the Rogers Cup.
Rafael Nadal, who lost his No. 1 world ranking to Djokovic last month, became a huge upset victim when he fell to Ivan Dodig.
Djokovic improved his amazing record this year to 51-1, defeating Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-1. The only loss for Djokovic thus far in 2011 came against Roger Federer in the semifinals of the French Open.
A month later Djokovic moved atop the world rankings by defeating Nadal for the championship at Wimbledon.
This was Djokovic's first match since Wimbledon. He received a bye past the first round of this tournament and in the third round he will meet Marin Cilic, who defeated Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4.
Dodig, with one tournament victory to his credit this year along with a runner-up finish, shocked Nadal 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5). Dodig will face Janko Tipsarevic in the third round after Tipsarevic defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
Federer, who would meet Djokovic in the semifinals if both continue to advance, won his second-round match over Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 6-3. Federer will take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round following Tsonga's 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) win over Bernard Tomic.
Viktor Troicki, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Nicolas Almagro, Tomas Berdych and Ivo Karlovic also advanced Wednesday.
