NEW YORK, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The New York Mets Monday placed two key members of the team -- shortstop Jose Reyes and infielder Daniel Murphy -- on the 15-day disabled list.

Both players were hurt during Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves.

Reyes, a potential free agent who leads the National League in batting with a .336 average, strained his left hamstring in the second inning. It was the second time this year he has landed on the DL with the same injury.

Murphy will likely miss the rest of the season after spraining a ligament in his left knee. He sustained the injury when Atlanta's Jose Constanza slid into him while stealing second base in the seventh inning.

Murphy won't need surgery but will be out 6-8 weeks. He was batting .320 in 109 games this season, with six home runs and 49 RBI.

The Mets recalled infielder Ruben Tejada and outfielder Mike Baxter from Class AAA Buffalo to take the spots of Reyes and Murphy.
