MLB: Detroit 5, Chicago White Sox 4

CHICAGO, July 26 (UPI) -- Justin Verlander struck out seven in eight innings Tuesday to lead the Detroit Tigers past the Chicago White Sox 5-4.

Verlander (14-5) gave up four runs on seven hits and one walk before turning the game over to Jose Valverde, who notched his 27th save of the season.

Miguel Cabrera drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who have won six of their last nine. Wilson Betemit had two hits, including an RBI single in the eighth inning that proved to be the game-winner.

Betemit got his decisive hit off Will Ohman (0-2), who took the loss in relief of Jake Peavy. Peavy gave up four runs on 10 hits and struck out six over six innings.

Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn homered off Verlander to lead the Sox. Chicago saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and also lost a game to the American League Central-leading Tigers.
