Wood hangs on to lead in Spain with a 69

SON SERVERA, Spain, May 14 (UPI) -- Chris Wood turned in an unspectacular 1-under 69 Saturday but still extended his lead at the Ibderdrola Open in Spain to four strokes.

Wood held off Shane Lowry and Darren Clarke, who were tied for second heading into Sunday's finals.

Wood carded a bogey and two birdies on the Pula Golf Club links, which Wood said was playing shorter than they had in the first two rounds. "It was one of those days where everyone just had to hang in there a little bit," Wood said. "The course has definitely firmed up a lot."

Wood is 9-under 201 for the tournament and in position for his first European Tour victory after coming close in last year's Africa Open and BMW PGA Championship.

Lowry may have some momentum behind him Sunday. He shot a 7-under 63, tying a course record and climbing into second with Clarke, who shot an even-par 70 Saturday.
