MLB: Pittsburgh 7, Washington 2

PITTSBURGH, April 23 (UPI) -- Lyle Overbay ignited a five-run first inning and drove in a pair of runs Saturday, propelling the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-2 win over Washington.

Overbay drove in Andrew McCutchen to make it 1-0 and the Pirates went on to get RBI from Garrett Jones, Ryan Doumit, Pedro Alvarez and Ronny Cedeno before the big inning was through.

Overbay added another run-scoring single in the sixth for the Bucs, who took the first game of a rain-shortened three-game series with Washington.

Jeff Karstens (2-0) hurled six solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three.

Washington's Livan Hernandez (2-2) was saddled with the loss, yielding all seven runs (four earned) on nine hits over six frames.

Jayson Werth homered and Michael Morse added two hits and an RBI for the Nats.
