CLEVELAND, April 6 (UPI) -- Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning Wednesday that sent the Cleveland Indians sailing to an 8-4 victory over winless Boston.
Cabrera drove in four runs overall and the Indians opened a 7-2 lead through six innings while handing the Red Sox their fifth straight loss to open the season. It is Boston's worst start to a campaign since 1996.
Shin-Soo Choo opened the Cleveland scoring with a two-run homer in the first and Matt LaPorta finished it with a solo shot in the eighth.
Cleveland starter Mitch Talbot struck out seven but he did not last long enough to pick up the victory. Rafael Perez (1-0), the third pitcher for the Indians, worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the victory.
Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer for Boston, which was counting on Daisuke Matsuzaka to end the losing streak. Matsuzaka (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits over five innings and suffered the setback.
