MLS: Real Salt Lake 1, San Jose 0

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 20 (UPI) -- Kyle Beckerman scored a rain-drenched goal Saturday and Real Salt Lake bested San Jose 1-0 in the season openers for both squads.

The game was played under rainy conditions in Santa Clara, Calif., and Beckerman's low, hard shot bounced on the wet turf and off the fingertips of Earthquakes goalie Jon Busch in the 64th minute.

RSL (1-0-0) finished with the second-best record in the MLS last season at 15-4-11, but was ousted by eventual Western Conference champs FC Dallas.

San Jose (0-1-0) made an unexpected run to the West final last season where the 'Quakes lost to Dallas.
