COL BKB: Va. Commonwealth 74, G'town 56

CHICAGO, March 19 (UPI) -- Brandon Rozzell made six of 11th-seeded Virginia Commonwealth's 12 3-pointers Friday and the Rams stunned sixth-seeded Georgetown in the NCAA tournament 74-56.

Virginia Commonwealth had to win a first-round game over Southern California just to get into the main bracket as the No. 11 seed in the Southeast Region and then went to the free-throw line 39 times in eliminating the Hoyas.

Rozzell was 8-of-13 from the field and scored 26 points, pushing the Rams into a game Sunday against third-seeded Purdue. The Boilermakers advanced with a 65-43 decision over St. Peter's.

Joey Rodriguez made all nine of his free-throw attempts and scored 17 points for Virginia Commonwealth (25-11), one of two teams from the Colonial Athletic Association still alive in the tournament. George Mason also knocked off a Big East Conference team when it defeated Villanova Friday.

Georgetown's season came to a close with its fifth straight loss. The Hoyas (21-11) dropped their final three games in the regular campaign, then lost to Connecticut in the Big East Conference Tournament.

Hollis Thompson led the Hoyas with 24 points.

Virginia Commonwealth had a 35-24 lead at halftime and then opened the second period on a 14-4 run.
