COL BKB: Va. Commonwealth 59, USC 46

DAYTON, Ohio, March 17 (UPI) -- Ed Nixon touched off a game-closing run Wednesday that pushed Virginia Commonwealth into the NCAA Tournament's second round with a 59-46 win over USC.

The Rams finished the contest on a 15-3 surge, making them a No. 11 seed in the Southwest Region and bringing about a matchup with sixth-seeded Georgetown Friday in Chicago.

Jamie Skeen scored 16 points to lead the Rams (24-11), who finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association and lost in the finals of the league tournament to Old Dominion. Virginia Commonwealth is one of three CAA teams to receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Nixon's 3-pointer gave the Rams a 47-43 lead and ignited the key surge. Nixon scored seven points and Virginia Commonwealth won despite making just 33 percent of its shots.

USC hit a mere 15 field goals for the game and was 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Jio Fontan led the Trojans (19-15) with 14 points.
