Federer, Roddick advance at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 13 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Roger Federer and No. 8 Andy Roddick each registered second-round wins Sunday to advance at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

Federer, a three-time Indian Wells champ, downed Russia's Igor Andreev 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) and will now move on to a meeting with Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela.

Roddick, meanwhile, bested James Blake in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. The U.S. star also advanced to the next round, where he will face fellow American John Isner.

Isner advanced by topping Brazilian Ricardo Mello 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Others posting second-round wins Sunday included American Ryan Harrison, Jurgen Melzer of Austria, Czech Tomas Berdych and Viktor Troicki of Serbia.

Joining them were a group that included Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Michael Llodra, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland and Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.
