GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Austria's Elisabeth Goergl won her second gold medal of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Sunday with a victory in the prestigious women's downhill.

Goergl took advantage of improved snow conditions on Germany's Kandahar run and finished in 1 minute, 47.24 seconds.

Pre-race favorites Lindsey Vonn of the United States took the silver with a 1:47.68, and Maria Riesch of Germany placed third at 1:47.84.

The win was also the third gold medal for the Austrian women's team. Goergl won the super-G on Tuesday and Anna Fenninger won the super-combined on Friday.

"Lizzy (Goergl) has stepped up and she's done incredibly well. Her runs were amazing," said Vonn, the defending champion who appeared to be fully back on her feet after being slowed by a concussion suffered in a practice.

"I could feel the speed today," said Vonn. "There were great conditions out there and I enjoyed racing ."
