NCAA officials ruled the first five students must repay amounts ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 they received while committing violations, including selling gifts from the university, selling championship rings and accepting discounted services from businesses. Whiting was ordered to pay $150 to a charity "for the value of services that were discounted."

The university said the six students will remain eligible to play in the Jan. 4 AllState Sugar Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Gene Smith, associate vice president and director of athletics at Ohio State, said student-athletes will receive more education on NCAA rules.

"After going through this experience," Smith said, "we will further enhance our education for all our student-athletes as we move forward."
