N.Y. Jets suspend coach who tripped player

NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The New York Jets fined and suspended strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi Monday for tripping the Miami Dolphins' Nolan Carroll during a game.

Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement that Alosi was suspended for the rest the year and fined $25,000 for the incident in Sunday's 10-6 Jets loss to Miami.

Video showed Alosi subtly sticking his knee into the path of Carroll as the Dolphins special teams player was racing along the sidelines to cover a punt.

Carroll, who was out of bounds when he collided with Alosi, tumbled to the turf and lay motionless for several minutes before being helped off the field.

"We're extremely disappointed with what he did," Tannenbaum said. "There's no place for it in the game. He knows that. It's our job to hold him accountable for that."

"I let everybody down yesterday with my actions," Alosi said Monday. "My actions were inexcusable and irresponsible. I'm extremely thankful that my actions yesterday didn't result in any serious injury to Nolan or any other player.

"It was a situation where I wasn't thinking."

Carroll returned to the game after the incident.
