Li, Pennetta lose in Kremlin Cup 1st round

MOSCOW, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- No. 3-seeded Li Na and fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta were upset victims Tuesday in first-round action of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.

With No. 1-seeded Jelena Jankovic and second-seeded Victoria Azarenka given first-round byes, Li was the highest seeded player on the court Tuesday but the stay was relatively short as Anna Chakvetadze ousted Li 6-4, 6-2.

Chakvetadze amassed five service breaks in nine games, winning more points (34-32) on Li's serve than Li managed.

Pennetta battled more than two hours but fell to Elena Vesnina 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Vesnina didn't face a break point in the third set.

No. 6-seeded Maria Kirilenko converted all six break-point chances she had in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alexandra Dulgheru and seventh-seeded Alisa Kleybanova survived a long 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1) match against Lucie Safarova.

A pair of qualifiers advanced to the second round. Zarina Diyas took a tight -- both players won 122 points -- match against Gisela Dulko 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-5); and Mariya Koryttseva also went more than 2 1/2 hours in defeating Klara Zakopalova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Other first-round winners Tuesday were Vera Dushevina, Tsvetana Pironkova, Sara Errani and Andrea Petkovic.
