Sharks' Thornton signs 3-year extension

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The San Jose Sharks said Saturday they have reached a three-year, $21 million contract extension agreement with star center Joe Thornton.

Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said Thornton has made "a tremendous commitment to this franchise" with the deal.

"We are very pleased that we now have another key piece of this team's core under contract for the next four seasons," he said.

Thornton, 31, has scored two goals in two games this season and has racked up 10 straight seasons of at least 20 goals -- the second-longest such streak in the NHL behind only Calgary's Jarome Iginla with 11 straight.

The big center, who was the first overall choice of the 1997 draft, came to the Sharks in a blockbuster November 2005 trade with the Boston Bruins.

He has 287 career goals and 646 assists for 933 points in 917 career regular season games with 15 goals and 50 assists in 91 playoff games.
