Hallberg's 61 earns him Ensure victory

CONOVER, N.C., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Gary Hallberg shot a sizzling 11-under 61 Sunday, tying a course record to claim the Ensure Classic by one shot.

Hallberg collected his first Champions Tour victory with the fine round, finishing with an 18-under 198 -- matching a tournament record and holding off a rally by Fred Couples.

Couples (67) came charging toward the lead late in the day but stalled out on the 18th hole when he couldn't sink an 8-foot birdie putt with a chance to force a playoff, thus handing Hallberg his first victory of any kind since 2002 while on the Nationwide Tour.

Bernhard Langer, the tour money leader, also shot a 67, good for third place at 16-under 200. Langer started the day one shot in back of 36-hole leader Couples.

Bob Tway (62) ended up with sole possession of fourth place at minus-15 and Morris Hatalsky (68) claimed fifth, one shot further back at minus-14.
