HOMESTEAD, Fla., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Dario Franchitti moved closer to his second straight IndyCar championship Friday by winning the pole for the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Franchitti turned in a two-lap average of 213.187 mph and will start in front Saturday in the Cafes do Brasil Indy 300. He won his second pole of the season and earned a point in the championship race.
Going into the final event, Franchitti is second in points -- 11 behind Will Power. Franchitti will win the championship if he leads the most laps and wins the race, no matter what Power does.
Franchitti will also claim the crown if he wins and Power finishes third or lower.
"It would be nice to lead the whole race, but we will see what happens," Franchitti said. "There are so many unknowns. It's just impossible to predict these things."
He was five points behind Scott Dixon going into the final race last year and wound up winning the race and the series championship as well.
